Krita is open-source painting built by artists: brushes with real engine quality, animation support, and a stabilization system for linework that professionals use daily. Free across every desktop, funded by a nonprofit foundation.
It is a painting and sketching tool rather than a photo retoucher, and the brush library rewards tuning. For illustration without subscriptions, it is the reference.
