Roborock makes strong cleaning hardware, but its own app runs through a Roborock account and cloud, and the map of your home goes with it. Some models, including certain S5, S6 and S7 units, can be rooted to run Valetudo, which replaces the cloud with local control on your own network. Rooting means opening the […]
Sceptre still lists conventional non-smart 4K TVs, such as the U435CV-UMRD and U515CV-UMRD, with a tuner and HDMI inputs but no app platform. Without a smart operating system there is no account, no viewing-data recognition and no ad banner: the TV shows what your own box or player sends it. Sceptre also sells smart TVs, […]
The Honeywell Home T6 Pro Z-Wave (TH6320ZW2007) talks Z-Wave instead of Wi-Fi, so it pairs with a local controller such as Home Assistant or Hubitat and needs no Resideo account or internet connection. Schedules and temperature control also work on the thermostat itself. You need a Z-Wave controller, and it is made for standard low-voltage […]
SwitchBot’s little robots press your existing buttons and flip your existing switches, which means privacy-friendly automation without replacing a single appliance. Local API support and Home Assistant integration exist for the people who check for those things. Its cloud features were the default path historically, and the devices are plastic where rivals are metal. A […]
Aqara’s sensors cover motion, doors, water leaks and vibration at fair prices, and they run on Zigbee, so they pair directly with Home Assistant or Zigbee2MQTT and need no Aqara hub or account. The Aqara Home app and cloud are the weak spot: in June 2026 a researcher disclosed hard-coded encryption keys in its Android […]
Vikunja is open-source task management you can host yourself or use hosted: lists, kanban boards, Gantt charts, labels and team sharing, with apps and CalDAV support. Your tasks, your server, your rules. Self-hosting is the intended path, so there is a small maintenance footprint, and the hosted option exists if you would rather not. To-do […]
OsmAnd turns OpenStreetMap data into fully offline navigation: download a country, keep GPS working with no connection, and log tracks without anyone’s server learning where you went. Open source, with contour lines, hiking routes and marine depths if you want them. The interface packs more options than most people will ever open, and free users […]
Organic Maps is the friendliest offline map on mobile: free, open source, built on OpenStreetMap, with offline search and turn-by-turn navigation that never phones home. The foundation behind it takes no investment and publishes everything. Fewer advanced layers than OsmAnd and no online traffic data, which is the point. Install, download your region, delete Google […]
CoreELEC is a minimal Linux system that runs Kodi on cheap Amlogic TV boxes, booting straight into your media center in seconds. The community tunes it per device for smooth playback. It supports specific hardware only, and setup means flashing and choosing the right image. A boutique path to a silent, dedicated media box.
ONLYOFFICE offers the closest-to-Microsoft formatting among open-source suites, with online collaboration you can self-host in your own Nextcloud or on your own server. Desktop and mobile apps are free as well. The full-featured server edition sits behind commercial licensing tiers, and the document editor is heavier than LibreOffice on old machines. Compatibility first, ideology second.
