OnionShare – The Ephemeral Dead Drop

OnionShare turns the computer in front of you into a temporary Tor service. You can send files, publish a small site, or chat, and the address dies when you close the program. Micah Lee started it. The app bundles Tor, so the sender does not separately install Tor Browser. The other person can open the address in Tor Browser.

You have to stay online until they finish the download. Speeds are Tor speeds. The address is a secret. If you paste it into a public channel, the drop is public. There is no company holding the file after you disconnect, which is the point, and also why a closed laptop means a failed transfer.

Use it for a file that should not sit on a cloud. onionshare.org

OnionShare’s receive mode can also collect files from someone else, which is useful and easy to leave running by mistake. Close it. The chat mode is for a short conversation, not a permanent identity. If the other person cannot install Tor Browser, this is the wrong tool. Agree on the file name out of band so you notice a swap. The address is capability. Anyone who has it can download.
