KeePassDX is a free open-source password manager for Android that keeps your logins in an encrypted KeePass file you control.4 It suits people who want to choose where their vault lives. Start with it if you are comfortable looking after a file and its backups.

What KeePassDX does and how it protects your privacy
Think of the vault as a locked document containing your sign-in details. KeePassDX can open and edit KeePass files, including the KDBX format used by compatible apps.1 KDBX is the file type, much as PDF is a document type. You are choosing an app to work with that file.
The project separates editing your vault from moving it between devices: another file or cloud app handles the transfer.5 That gives you a useful choice: begin with a file on your phone, then decide whether syncing is worth the extra setup. Do not make cloud storage part of your routine just because you assume a password manager needs it.
For everyday use, aim for a workflow you can repeat: unlock, find a login, fill it, and lock again. Practise with one low-risk account before moving your main email and banking credentials.
KeePassDX key features
- Autofill: Fill password fields through Android’s autofill support.7
- Magikeyboard: An alternative keyboard for filling fields.7
- Biometric unlock: Use supported fingerprint or face recognition for quicker access.1
- Passkeys: Store private keys locally for supported passwordless sign-ins.7
- Sign-in codes: Manage time-based and counter-based one-time passwords.2
- Folders: Organize credentials into groups instead of one long list.1
KeePassDX pros and cons
Pros
- Works without an internet connection, including when you need a login away from home.7
- The project says free users receive the same encryption and data protection.1
- You can choose local or remote file storage.5
- Portable files offer a route to other compatible apps.4
Cons
- KeePassDX itself is an Android app; plan on a different app for desktop use.4
- Syncing needs a separate file-transfer setup.5
- The documentation warns about file conflicts and cached, outdated copies in some cloud workflows.5
- You must keep track of your master password and any required keyfile.4
Is KeePassDX safe and private?
Kunzisoft’s project describes volunteer maintenance.1 The latest GitHub release checked was 4.5.6, dated October 17, 2026.3 The repository page showed no archived-project notice. Recent releases support treating it as an active project.
The developer’s Google Play declaration says no data is collected or shared with third parties.7 That is a developer declaration, not an independent telemetry test. This review did not run the app or inspect its network traffic.
The app supports several encryption methods, including AES, Twofish and ChaCha20.2 Encryption locks the file’s contents so they cannot simply be read as ordinary text. Your file can live locally, on external storage or through a compatible remote file provider.5 Choose the storage provider separately and consider who can access its account.
A contributor posted a security-review report in April 2026; maintainers linked fixes, while identifying a device-unlock change as delayed.6 The issue later closed as completed.6 I could not verify a formal independent audit of KeePassDX. Do not treat audits of other KeePass-compatible apps as an audit of this one.
For extra separation, consider keeping sign-in codes outside the password vault: KeePassXC’s guidance recommends a separate database with a different password to maximize the second factor’s benefit.8 Our 2FAS Auth guide is another starting point for that decision.
How to get started with KeePassDX
- Download from a listed source. Use the project’s F-Droid listing or Google Play listing. Both were checked for this review.
- Start with a test vault. Create a new database, or open a copy of an existing KeePass file. Keep your original untouched while you learn.
- Choose a master passphrase. Make it long and unique. Write a recovery copy and store it somewhere physically secure. Add a keyfile only when you understand how you will preserve it.
- Save one test login. Give it a recognizable title and its website address. Try autofill, then lock the vault and reopen it.
- Make a backup away from the phone. Keep a dated copy and check that it opens. Plan how often you will refresh it; our Duplicati guide can help you think through a broader backup routine.
- Add syncing last. Test a harmless change across your devices before relying on it. Check which copy is current and keep older backups while learning.
Who should use KeePassDX and who might prefer something else?
KeePassDX is a strong choice when you want an Android vault whose storage arrangements you understand. Give it a try if keeping a file and making backups feels manageable. If you want someone else to handle the whole sync workflow, compare that convenience against the extra responsibility here before moving your important accounts.
For a computer, KeePassXC runs on Windows, macOS and Linux and uses KDBX files.8 For shared workplace credentials, compare our Passbolt Community Edition guide. Choose around the task: personal phone access, desktop access or a group’s sharing routine.
Frequently asked questions about KeePassDX
Is KeePassDX free?
Yes: the core app is free, and paying for Pro supports development rather than buying stronger security.1 Start free and consider contributing if it becomes useful to you.
Does KeePassDX work on iPhone?
KeePassDX is for Android.4 For an iPhone, check a separate KeePass-compatible app and its current documentation before moving a vault. Do not assume every client supports every advanced feature.
Can KeePassDX sync passwords between devices?
Yes, through a separate file-sync arrangement; KeePassDX can merge changes from the file supplied to it.5 Test your chosen combination before using it for your only working vault.
What if I forget my KeePassDX master password?
The FAQ says the database cannot be opened without its required master password or keyfile.4 Quick biometric access is not a replacement for knowing that password.4 Keep recovery information separately and practise opening a backup before you need it.
