Startpage fetches Google’s results and shows them to you, so Google does not get your IP address or a lasting search profile from that visit. The company is in the Netherlands. Anonymous View can open the result page through Startpage’s proxy, which also hides your address from the site you clicked.
You are still looking at Google’s ranking. The ranking is Google’s. In 2019, Privacy One Group, part of the advertising company System1, bought a majority stake in Startpage. The product can still strip your identity from the query. The ownership is why a lot of privacy lists stopped treating the 1998 origin story as enough. If the search itself is the sensitive act, a proxy in front of Google still means Startpage’s servers fetched it. Do not log into Google in the next tab and undo the point. Anonymous View is slower and it is the part that also hides you from the result site. Turn it on for the page you would not want tied to your home address, then close it.
