Hyphanet, formerly Freenet, stores files in pieces across volunteers’ computers. There is no single server that holds the whole file, which removes an easy takedown target. It does not make every publisher impossible to identify. Writing style, timing, and the computer you insert from can still give you away.
Inserting and fetching are slow. Unpopular files fade as caches drop them. The interface looks old because the project has spent its effort on the network. It is the option for publishing that should not depend on one host, and it is a bad fit for anything you need back in a hurry.
Use it when the threat is a server seizure. Do not use it as a faster Tor. hyphanet.org
