MusicBrainz Picard review: tag your own music files

Plain CD cases and headphones beside a closed laptop on a wooden desk.

MusicBrainz Picard is a free open-source music tagger for people who keep their own songs and want the artist, album and track names filled in.13 It is the official MusicBrainz tagger, and it runs on Linux, macOS and Windows.4 You work on files on your computer and choose when Picard asks that database for a match.

  • Official site: picard.musicbrainz.org

What MusicBrainz Picard does (and how it protects your privacy)

Picard fills in the labels stored inside a music file. Those labels are called tags: the artist, album, track title and similar details a player shows. It uses an album-oriented approach, grouping songs that belong together and matching them to one release.4

You add a folder, cluster the files into albums, then use Lookup. If the names are missing or wrong, Scan builds an AcoustID fingerprint on your computer and uses that fingerprint to identify the recording.68 A fingerprint is a short summary of how the audio sounds, which helps when a file is named only “track01”.

Picard shows existing tags beside the proposed ones, with colour for how confident the match is, and writes the new tags when you press Save.7 Scan looks a fingerprint up on the AcoustID server, and Picard can also download cover art.18

Key MusicBrainz Picard features

  • Common audio formats: Picard supports MP3, FLAC, OGG, M4A, WMA, WAV and more.1
  • Album lookup: Cluster files and look the album up in the MusicBrainz database.17
  • AcoustID scan: Identify a file from the sound itself when tags are empty or wrong.1
  • CD lookup: Look up an entire CD with a click.1
  • Cover art: Find and download album artwork.1
  • Names and folders: A scripting language sets how file names and tags are written, and Picard can sort files into a folder layout you describe.17
  • Plugins: Add extra behaviour from the published plugins, or write your own.1
  • Fingerprinting switch: Acoustic fingerprinting can be turned off. The other fingerprint settings are then locked.6

MusicBrainz Picard pros and cons

Pros

  • Picard is free software, and the source code is published on GitHub.3
  • The licence is GPL 2.0 or later, and the project says it is actively developed.1
  • Version 3.0.2 came out on 11 October 2026 as a maintenance update.3 The changelog lists 3.0.3 dated 29 October 2026.9 The download page still offers the 3.0.2 installers.2
  • Files with no metadata can still be recognised from an AcoustID fingerprint.1
  • You can compare original and new values, and drag a track into the right place before saving.7
  • Writing the long fingerprint into the file’s tags is turned off by default.6

Cons

  • Picard is not built to be a mass single-track tag fixer. It matches albums.47
  • A scan looks the fingerprint up on the AcoustID server.8 The MetaBrainz privacy policy says logs of requests to its servers include your IP address, the User-Agent string (a short program name sent with the request) and the parameters.5
  • The macOS 3.0.2 downloads need macOS 13 or newer. The page also lists Picard 2.13.3 for macOS 10.14 and macOS 10.12.2
  • The download page lists desktop systems, including Haiku, FreeBSD and OpenBSD. It does not list an iPhone or Android app.2
  • If Lookup or Scan finds nothing, Lookup in Browser opens your usual browser so you can choose the release yourself.7

Is MusicBrainz Picard safe and private?

The MetaBrainz blog says Picard is free software and that the source code is available on GitHub. It calls 3.0.2 a maintenance release posted on 11 October 2026, and says that release fixes a crash in the Setup Wizard if Picard was packaged with the automatic update check disabled.3

MetaBrainz says you do not have to provide personal data to browse the databases it publishes, and you do not have to give personally identifying information if you choose not to.5 Submitting a fingerprint is separate from matching one. If AcoustID already links that fingerprint to a MusicBrainz recording, you do not need to submit it. Contributing means pressing Submit with an AcoustID API key, which the documentation says costs nothing.68

A scan calculates the fingerprint on your computer with Chromaprint (fpcalc), which is included with Picard, then looks the fingerprint up.68 The MetaBrainz privacy policy says logs of requests to its servers include the IP address, the User-Agent string and the endpoint with its parameters.5 Lookup in Browser opens your usual browser so you can pick a release by hand, and Picard can download cover art.17

How to get started with MusicBrainz Picard

  1. Download it from the official page. Use picard.musicbrainz.org/downloads. Windows has a 3.0.2 64-bit installer, a portable build, and a Microsoft Store app for Windows 10 and 11. macOS 3.0.2 needs macOS 13 or newer, with an arm64 build (Apple silicon) and an x86_64 build (Intel). Linux links include Flatpak, Snap and distribution packages. The changelog lists version 3.0.3 dated 29 October 2026, while this page still offers the 3.0.2 builds.29
  2. Practice on copies. Put two or three albums you know into a new folder, and leave the originals untouched until you have seen what Save changes. For a backup of the real collection, the Academy’s Backrest guide covers scheduled backups to a destination you choose.
  3. Add the practice folder. Open the file browser from the View menu, then use Add Folder. Wait until the names turn from grey to black.7
  4. Cluster, then look up. Use Cluster so the files group into album clusters. Select one cluster and use Lookup.7
  5. Scan only if lookup misses. Scan calculates an AcoustID fingerprint and looks it up.78 To skip that, use Lookup in Browser and pick the release yourself.7
  6. Check the match. Green is the best match, then yellow, orange and red. Compare Original Values with New Values, and drag a file onto the correct track if the guess is wrong.7
  7. Save, then listen. Select the album and press Save. A green check mark means the file is saved in its proper location.7 Play the copies in VLC media player before you tag a larger batch.

Who should use MusicBrainz Picard (and who might prefer something else)

Picard fits people who already have music files and want a desktop window for matching whole albums, including songs that arrived with a useless file name. Check each match before it is written, and start with a small folder.

If you would rather set repeatable rules and type commands, beets organises a library that way. If listening is the immediate job, start with VLC. When the files are named and tagged, Navidrome can stream that collection from a server you run.

Frequently asked questions

Is MusicBrainz Picard free?

Yes. The project calls Picard free software, and the source is available on GitHub.3 The licence is GPL 2.0 or later.1 The official download page offers the installers directly.2

Is MusicBrainz Picard safe?

It is open-source software.1 The changelog lists version 3.0.3 dated 29 October 2026, and the download page still offers 3.0.2, announced on 11 October 2026.923 A scan looks a fingerprint up on the AcoustID server.8 The MetaBrainz privacy policy says logs of requests to its servers include the IP address and the request parameters.5 You compare the proposed tags and save when you are satisfied with the match.7

Does MusicBrainz Picard work on iPhone?

The official download page lists Windows, macOS and Linux, and it also links builds for Haiku, FreeBSD and OpenBSD.2 It does not list an iPhone or Android app. Tag files on a computer, then play them on a phone with a player you already trust.

Does MusicBrainz Picard upload my music files?

A scan calculates a fingerprint on your computer and looks that fingerprint up on the AcoustID server.68 Sending a fingerprint to help later matches is a separate Submit step, and you can skip it when the recording is already linked.8 Save writes the tags you accepted into the files on your computer.7
