Ente Photos – Encrypted By Default

Ente is an end-to-end encrypted photo library. The apps are open source. Keys stay with you. Ente says the encrypted data is replicated across providers in more than one country so one outage is not the end of the archive. Face and object search run on the device, because the server cannot see the pictures.

The free tier is small. Past that you pay. There is no cloud editor that needs the server to understand the photo. Sharing is possible and a public link is still a public link. They have published audits. Read them if this is the family archive. A password reset story that sounds too convenient would break the encryption. Ente’s is not convenient in that way, on purpose.

Use it if you want photo backup without Google opening the files. ente.io

Ente’ s free storage fills up on the first phone full of video. Know the price of the plan you will actually need before you call it free. Turn on the device passcode inside the app. A phone backup of photos that unlocks with only the phone’s face is only as strong as the phone. Shared albums have other people in them. Their devices become part of the trust. The three-location story is resilience, not a second key.
