Proton Drive is end-to-end encrypted file storage from Proton in Switzerland. Files are encrypted before upload. Sharing is by link, with an optional password. The phone apps can back up photos. The same account can sit next to Proton Mail and VPN if you want one login.
Free space is small. The desktop sync client has improved and it is still not Dropbox. There is no web preview of a document the server cannot read, which is the point and also why it feels spare. Swiss courts can ask for account metadata. They cannot be handed the file contents if the encryption is doing what Proton describes. A shared link with no password is a file on the internet.
Use it for documents you do not want the storage company to open. proton.me/drive
Turn on Proton Drive’s photo backup only on a phone that is itself locked and encrypted. A lost phone with a logged-in Drive app is a window. Shared links need an expiry and a password if the file is not public. The desktop client syncs a folder. Do not point it at your entire home directory on the first day. Swiss jurisdiction is not a force field. The encryption is the control. Metadata about the account can still be asked for.
