Iridium operates the only voice and data network that covers every point on Earth, pole to pole, which is why expedition ships and remote workers carry its handsets. Calls route through its own satellite crosslinks, not local carriers.
Hardware and airtime are expensive, data speeds are last-century by design, and handsets themselves are not encrypted end-to-end. When nothing else connects, it connects.
