Mailbox.org is Heinlein’s hosted office in Berlin: mail, calendar, contacts, cloud storage, and an office suite, under German privacy law. The webmail speaks OpenPGP. Anonymous payment works. Cheap plans still allow your own domain, which is rare.
The interface is a tool, not a consumer app. Some of the better privacy switches sit in expert menus. You are trusting a German company with a whole workspace, not only an inbox. If you turn on every sharing feature and then upload a folder of unencrypted scans, the OpenPGP button did not save you. Read the settings once.
Use it when you want domain mail plus a calendar without Google. mailbox.org
Mailbox.org’s OpenPGP in the browser is useful and easy to misconfigure. A key you generate and then leave unprotected in the browser is theater. Custom domains are the feature that makes it a replacement for Google Workspace at the low end. Calendar invites to outsiders can leak more than the mail body. Send the sensitive part in the encrypted mail, not in the invite title.
