Roborock builds arguably the best cleaning hardware in the category: precise LiDAR mapping, strong suction, reliable navigation. The engineering is not in question. The cloud relationship is: security researchers have documented how robot vacuum data, including maps, travels to servers in China, according to their published findings and subsequent press coverage. Local mode and network […]
Sony’s picture processing remains the reference in the industry, and its Google TV sets at least expose honest toggles for viewing-data collection and personalized advertising in the settings menu. It is still an ad-funded smart TV platform underneath, and privacy researchers have documented what Automatic Content Recognition collects on sets like these. Turn the toggles […]
Samsung’s Tizen panels are excellent hardware with a decade of panel innovation behind them, and the company publishes privacy settings for its viewing-data features. The same sets have been widely documented by researchers and press running Automatic Content Recognition and showing advertisements in the interface, with lawsuits and regulatory attention following in several markets. Gorgeous […]
Sceptre sells televisions without a smart operating system: plug in a streaming box you control and there is no ACR, no ad banner on the home screen and no microphone listening for a wake word, because none of that exists in the set. Picture quality is budget-class and the design is plain. For buyers who […]
Honeywell’s smart thermostats come from a company that has made thermostats since before the internet, with models that work on standard low-voltage systems and offer scheduling and geofencing through their app. The cloud features are part of the deal, and Resideo’s data practices deserve the same read you would give any smart home company. Reliable […]
Mysa, a Canadian company, builds thermostats for high-voltage baseboard and in-floor heating that most smart brands ignore, with local processing emphasized and integration into Home Assistant for people who want the cloud out of the loop. It only covers line-voltage systems, so check your wiring before ordering, and the app experience is functional rather than […]
SwitchBot’s little robots press your existing buttons and flip your existing switches, which means privacy-friendly automation without replacing a single appliance. Local API support and Home Assistant integration exist for the people who check for those things. Its cloud features were the default path historically, and the devices are plastic where rivals are metal. A […]
Aqara’s sensors and hubs run on Zigbee, which keeps automations on your hub instead of a company’s cloud, and the line covers motion, door, water leak and vibration sensing at fair prices. The devices also pair directly with Home Assistant for people who want zero vendor involvement. The official app nudges you toward its own […]
CoreELEC is a minimal Linux system that runs Kodi on cheap Amlogic TV boxes, booting straight into your media center in seconds. The community tunes it per device for smooth playback. It supports specific hardware only, and setup means flashing and choosing the right image. A boutique path to a silent, dedicated media box.
Kodi is the free, open-source media center that turns any computer or TV box into a library player for your own files: movies, series, music, photos, with add-ons for streaming formats you configure yourself. Two decades of development and a huge community stand behind it. It plays what you point it at and ships nothing […]
