Ladybird is a new browser engine, written from scratch. It is not a skin on Chrome or Firefox, and it is not a finished private browser. The project says it is in pre-alpha. Its own site is aiming at a first alpha in 2026 for Linux and macOS, meant for developers and early testers. Windows is later. The GitHub page says the same thing in fewer words: only suitable for developers.
There is no product yet that you can hand to a family and call private. Features people expect, including a normal installer and automatic updates, were still on the list in the project’s August 2026 newsletter. An unfinished engine can also be missing security fixes that Firefox and Chrome already shipped. Watching the work is reasonable. Browsing your bank in it is not.
Use it only if you build software and you already know you are the tester. Skip it as a daily browser until the project itself says otherwise. ladybird.org
